How we test

Every review names the specific gear we packed and the trip we packed it for. We don’t rate a bag we haven’t used. When manufacturers send us samples we say so. When we buy the item ourselves, we say that too.

Editorial standards

• Every review says who the product isn’t for. A great travel bag can be a lousy hiking bag.
• Ratings use a 0-10 scale with sub-scores for build, comfort, capacity, access, and value.
• We update reviews when a product changes, and mark the update date at the top of the page.
• We do not accept sponsored reviews. Editorial and advertising are separate.

How we make money

Affiliate commissions on links, mostly. When you buy through a link on our site we may earn a small commission at no cost to you. Every link is labeled. Editorial decisions are not tied to commission rates. If a product is bad, we say so, even when the affiliate rate is high.
